about

In 1996 I had only been "composing" music for about 2 years, and this piece was about my 7th piece and the 4th and final original composition for the Cornelius Boots Trio. In fact, two of the originals--"Hazelnut" and "Quarkkase Quartet"--had existed prior to the formation of the Trio, so "Quince's Theme" and "The Devil's Sooty Brother" are the only compositions written exclusively for the Trio and as of today still exist only in this form.

The title comes from a lesser known Grimm's fairy tale in which this former soldier follows strange instructions from the Devil and ends up getting some gold in the end and living happily ever after. A mantra our protagonist has to repeat is "I am the devil's sooty brother and my king as well." Which makes no sense to me, but, that's the charm of these B-side Brothers Grimm tales.
