about

Eskimo is another Bay Area band (like MIRV) that I discovered through Les Claypool's Prawn Song record label and I enjoyed them immensely, although they did not become a long-time favorite of mine like MIRV did. This song worked really well for us, and when the Clarinet Journal wrote a review of our cassette-only release that contained about half of the songs presented here (released on the cassette-only branch of Secretly Canadian Records which was called Canadian Exchange) for some reason the reviewer changed the title from "Pumpkins" to "Klezmer Pumpkins" which I thought was taking quite a liberty. At that time I would really get my panties in a bunch when people thought I was "influenced by klezmer" when in fact I never listened to or practiced klezmer, but I DID listen to and practice music by rock musicians that were influenced by klezmer!---so the influence was there, but not in a direct way.

About a year or so ago I met David Cooper at the Starry Plough here in Berkeley and he had heard somehow (through John Shiurba most likely) that many years ago I had made this bass clarinet-centric arrangement of one of his old Eskimo tunes and I said "Yes, it's true." I sent him an mp3 of it and he enjoyed it quite a bit.
