about

Billy Joel started off as a rocker: he was a piano wiz that was obsessed with Jimi Hendrix, so he had a power duo called Attila with drummer Jon Small in 1969 when they left the band called The Hassles. Attila released one album in 1970 then Joel ran off with Small's wife and the duo ended. This band is a great band, and a big influence on me. Those that don't like Attila are either a) not really listening or b) also think bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were also "a really bad idea" so that's how I frame it.

I had a cassette from a friend---we were both big Billy Joel fans--that he had found in a discount bin, it was called "California Flash" and had most of the Attila tunes on it. I loved it! That distorted organ sound is really great, and there were riffs on here way closer to Sabbath than anything The Doors ever came up with, in terms of other keyboard riff makers of the era. This song "Holy Moses" was not on that cassette, eventually I finally found all eight Attila tracks on a German import CD, and "Holy Moses" was on there.
