about

Faked the wax cylinder! yeah!
The idea--and somehow this was a class assignment for my audio recording degree--was that we would get this actual wax cylinder machine to operate and record a remake of this classic Bessie Smith song from 1923. Well, we never got sound recorded on the cylinder, but we did record the machine playing back a blank cylinder. Then I recorded, in two separate sessions, the piano and the vocals onto 1/4" analog tape, and through what we call "studio wizardry," I got it to sound like we had actually got the wax machine to work, and it fooled Dr. Pickett. We revealed the deception after its success of course, but I really love listening back to how great a job Winton and Karen did in capturing that era, and, the fact that I never had to edit the length of the cylinder sound. By good coincidence, its length was perfect for the rendition we had achieved of the song. Thanks to Peter, Karen, Winton and of course, Dr. Pickett.
